AT Diving Regulations (Dec 18)

The Adventurous Training (AT) sub aqua diving document set has recently been amended to reflect organisational changes to the Defence Safety Agency (DSA).   The newly titled Superintendent of Defence Diving (SODD) has moved into the Navy Safety Centre (NSC) along with the Diving Standards Team.

A small number of typos have also been amended in both DCOP 22 and BRd 2806(5).

The current document set for Adventuruous Training (AT) sub aqua diving is as follows:

The master versions of these documents are located on the Defence intranet but can also be downloaded at the link above (DCOP 22 is contained in the BRd zip file).

The following points should be noted:

  • BRd 2806(5) is a large zip file (approx 10.5 MB) that will require extracting onto a local machine
  • Many of the pdf annexes in BRd 2806(5) require Adobe Reader to be viewed properly so may not work in browsers such as Safari (apple devices) or Chrome (android devices) – see below for word versions
  • Despite a request for annexes to be in word the RN policy is that they should be in pdf format.

All diving supervisors (SADS) should have a copy of these documents in their possession, be familiar with the contents and comply with the regulations within.

On occasion we are asked for word versions of some of the Annexes:

DSM 14-18 Suunto Zoop Novo

Several Suunto Zoop Novo dive computers used for AT diving have been discovered to offer reduced no-stop dive times compared to similar devices.  DSM 14-18 has been released to allow similar computers to be identifed and directs that they are not to be used for AT diving.

Click here to download DSM14-18 Suunto Zoop Novo

DSM 13/18 Gas Testing for AT Diving

Following several recent occasions where expeditions have received JSATFA clearance without valid laboratory gas tests, DSM 13/18 has been issued to remind single service AT desk officers of their responsibilities.

It can be downloaded at this link

AT Diving Incident Form (Dec 18)

BRd 2806(5) requires all incidents to be notified to the Defence Diving Standards Team (DST) using a slightly modified British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) incident reporting form.   This form has been updated to include the latest email addresses and job title for SDSI(AT) and the JSSADC Course Clerk

The latest version of the form, and continuation sheet, can be found at this links below:

JSSADC Expedition Slots – 2019

Hopefully most service divers are aware that JSSADC provides support to visiting expeditions in the form of a RIB, diving gas and storage/planning facilities. With the local area there is also plenty of service accommodation and dining facilities which should make organising expeditions relatively straightforward.

If you or your branch wishes to to bid for a slot in 2019 then the process for doing this is explained in the recently released 2018DIN07-125 Expedition slots at JSSADC; the bidding form is Annex A to 2018DIN07-125.

Please note that all bids need to be in by 31 Dec 18, after this they will be allocated on a first come-first served basis.

SADS Registration Form

A number of people have made us aware that the pdf version of the SADS Registration Form contained in BRd 2806(5) doesn’t work on some operating systems or browsers.

In order to overcome this issue, a word versions can be accessed at this link >>>>  SADS Registration Form (Annex 1A)

Northern Ireland – Exped Opportunity

Thiepval Barracks, Lisburn, is home to Lisburn & Glenavy Sub Aqua Club (LGSAC) – the only service sub aqua diving club in Northern Ireland. There is opportunity for other service diving clubs or units to conduct expeditions in Northern Ireland using LGSAC facilities, meaning that other than T&S, costs are minimal. A small donation to the club will be required to cover boat insurance/servicing. Kit and equipment can also be hired from the club for a small cost should this be required.

Local Diving

Northern Ireland’s long coastline and fascinating loughs offer some fabulous diving opportunities. The North Coast is known for spectacular drop offs, wrecks and reefs both deep and shallow – suitable for all levels of diver. Strangford Lough is home to 15 divable sites, while Belfast Lough offers up to 20 dive sites. Some of these sites even feature in the TV series Game of Thrones. LGSAC can provide advice on suitable sites for training and progression dives.

Equipment & Facilities

LGSAC has the following facilities

  • 7.5m RHIB which comfortably seats 8 divers and kit
  • Compressor
  • Boat shed/wet classroom
  • 25m pool
  • Drying room
  • Dry classroom
  • Bar/social area
  • Accommodation/Messes

2019 Guest Diver Dates

It’s that time of year again where we’re looking forward to another great diving season. Once again we’re hoping that service divers will continue to come and help us out by acting as either guest or rescue divers during our various courses.   If you are interested, then please get in touch with Mr Graeme Crouch on 9375 54729 or [email protected]

The dates below are when we require people.

Rescue Divers

We need Sport divers and above to act as rescue divers on each Ocean Diver course that we run:

Ocean Diver Course ODC 19-01 – 8th – 12th April
Ocean Diver Course ODC 19-02 – 15th – 19th Apr
Ocean Diver Course ODC 19-03 – 10th – 14th Jun
Ocean Diver Course ODC 19-04 – 5th – 9th Aug
Ocean Diver Course ODC 19-05 – 12th – 16th Aug
Ocean Diver Course ODC 19-06 – 30th Sep – 4th Oct
Ocean Diver Course ODC 19-07 – 14th – 18th Oct

If you would like to help out and have not rescue dived with us before you would need to come in and complete some paper work on the Monday of the course and then on the Tuesday take part in some skills and drills in the pool at HMS Raleigh along with diving with a 3ltr pony as a alternate independent air source. If you cannot make either the Monday or Tuesday please let us know at the earliest opportunity as we can then look to do all this on either the Monday or Tuesday. If you have already completed the paper work and pool dive with us there is no requirement for you to come down and rescue dive until the Wednesday of the course, we look to do 5 open water dives 2 on the Wednesday, 2 on the Thursday and then a depth progression on the Friday if the weather is good (normally on HMS Scylla).

Guest Divers

As part of the BSADS course and ESADS assessment, we need to give the students the opportunity to plan and manage diving with realistic numbers of divers. This provides a great opportunity for individuals to come along and enjoy a few days diving whilst also gaining the opportunity to see what these courses are all about.

BSADS 19-01 – 8th – 12th Apr
BSADS 19-02 – 17th – 21st Jun
BSADS 19-03 – 19th – 23rd Aug
BSADS 19-04 – 16th – 20th Sep
BSADS 19-05 – 28th Oct – 1st Nov
BSADS 19-06 – 25th – 29th Nov

ESADS Assessment 19-01 – 13th – 17th May
ESADS Assessment 19-02 – 24th – 28th Jun
ESADS Assessment 19-03 – 23rd – 27th Sep
ESADS Assessment 19-04 – 4th – 8th Nov

In order to guest dive on these courses you need to be a minimum grade of Sports diver, have a valid service sports diving medical and have completed dives in the last 2 months to depths greater than 20m for the BSADS and 25m for the ESADS Assessment.

If you are interested then please get in touch with Mr Graeme Crouch on 9375 54729 or [email protected]
