Ex RUSTY MERGANSER is a Naval Service sub aqua diving expedition to Scapa Flow that will take place 8-13 Oct 2017 and will be run by staff from JSSADC. The former RN Loyal class fleet tender and now liveaboard diving boat, MV Valhalla, will provide the base for the duration of the expedition.
Scapa Flow is world famous for the quality of its wreck diving. This was created by the scuttling of the German High Seas fleet in 1919 and the sinking of a further 43 ships by the
Admiralty during both world wars in an attempt to block the entrances. Undoubtedly it is the best wreck diving site in Europe.
Ex RUSTY MERGANSER will aim to dive all the major WW1 wrecks in Scapa Flow including the battleships Konig, Kronprinz Willhelm and Markgraf.
Royal Navy and Royal Marines divers who are interested in participating should read 2016DIN07-111 and submit an application form by 30 Nov 16.
The next Joint Service Diving Safety Conference will be held on 8 Mar 2017.
Once again it will be held at HMS RALEIGH near Plymouth, and will offer the opportunity for sub aqua divers from all 3 services to meet, share experiences and knowledge. We’ll have a wide range of speakers including a BSAC representative, the Superintendent of Diving, Diving Standards Officer (AT), and of course JSSADC. A key note speaker hasn’t been booked yet but we’re happy to take suggestions!
There will also be the opportunity to have a Q&A session with members of the Joint Service Sub Aqua Diving Policy Advisory Committee (JSSADPAC) and a social event in the evening.
To help make the trip to Plymouth more valuable we’ve also laid on courses both before and after the conference. There are:
- Marine Radio Operator (MRO): 6-7 Mar 17
- Diver Coxswain Assessment: 6-7 Mar 17
- SADS Refresher Course: 9-10 Mar 17
- Collective First Aid Training: 9-10 Mar 17
