The new JSP 419 has clarified the requirements for swimming tests when conducting water based AT, including try dives. It is now mandatory (JSP 419, Chapter 1, para 31) for all participants to have a recorded pass in their respective single service swimming test.
The only exceptions to this ((JSP 419, Chapter 2, Section 16, para 4) are :
- Attendance on the BSAC Ocean Diver course which includes a swimming assessment as part of the course . Should an individual not satisfactorily complete the assessment then they are not to continue with the course.
- Qualified divers wishing to participate in expeditions who will have already demonstrated swimming ability.
It should be noted that other publications, such as BRd 2806(5), or those issued by the single services, such as AP 3342 Leaflet 560, may have differing requirements to those in JSP 419. These are no longer accurate and will be updated in due course – JSP 419 is the authoritative document.
The bottom line is that anyone wishing to conduct a try dives must have a recorded pass in their respective single service swimming tests before getting in the water.
